How To Pitch To Black Art & Design

Our journey is just beginning and we are looking for writers, especially those based in Europe, Africa and the Americas. Although we are an arts publication, we’re interested in stories that have a wider appeal, enticing a non-arts person to want to read it.

To understand what were interested in, read our site. Notice certain topics appear more often: art as a tool for social change, the impact of new people and ideas on the art world, how art tells the narrative of the African Diaspora.

Here are a few forms your piece could take:

News Story:  This is where art intersects with politics. We publish short and long news pieces on topics ranging from protests to debates over repatriation. We do publish stories about new hires

Review: We publish reviews of exhibitions, performance art, theatre and dance. As the shows are temporary we want to tell readers about it to inspire them to either attend or learn more about the artist. Pitch to us in advance as we try to run reviews while shows are open. We understand that sometimes this is not possible as live performances (theatre, dance, performing art) often happen for one or two nights only. So if you see a show that has finished and you feel it’s worthy of further attention, pitch to us as we are more flexible.

As for music and book reviews, we’ll consider it as long as the book or music has been out in the last six months.

Interview:  Q & A are a favourite of ours. Tell us why you want to interview this person now. Does an artist have an exhibition on view or recently won an award? a choreographer or theatre director in the middle of a run.

Opinion Piece: We pride ourselves on being opinionated. We want our writers to be as well. Please make sure your opinions are well researched and know how to argue your point.

  • Keep it short and concise, about two or three paragraphs tops.
  • After you’ve pitched your story, introduce yourself (in a few sentences). Include links to a few clips or attach writing samples.
  • Include relevant dates for a show/film screening/etc. in your pitch. Also link to a page with more info about it.
  • We prefer pitches but will consider submissions.
  • Tell us if you’re simultaneously pitching the same story elsewhere.
