Joy Labinjo | Artist Overview

Joy Labinjo

b.1994, British-Nigerian

My work is fundamentally about my British - Nigerian heritage and what that experience means. I work in series, working between historical references and my lived experiences as a way of documenting. I am political because my very existence is politicised, by extension the works are too. Joy Labinjo is a London based painter, who was awarded the Woon Art Prize in 2017. Her acclaimed commission for the Brixton Underground Station in London, UK, 5 more minutes, was on view throughout November 2022. Recent exhibitions include: The Body Electric, Larsen Warner Gallery, Stockholm, Sweden (group โ€“ 2024); Beloved, Take What You Need, Tiwani Contemporary, London, UK (solo โ€“ 2023); Real Families, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, UK (group โ€“ 2023); A Bout Des Mes Rรชves,Vanhaerents Collection at Tripostale, Lille, UK (group โ€“ 2023); Africa Supernova, Kunsthal Kade, Amersfoort, Netherlands (group โ€“ 2023); Zeitz MOCAA, South Africa (group โ€“ 2022); Womenโ€™s Art Collection, Cambridge, UK (group -2022); Ode to Olaudah Equiano, Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff, UK (solo โ€“ 2022), Full Ground, Tiwani Contemporary, Lagos, Nigeria (2022).
